What does it mean to be an East European existential therapist in 2025?

Matthew about his workshop: “On so many different levels, it is a challenging time to be a therapist right now. This workshop is an opportunity to come together with friends and colleagues to share and explore some of the challenges we face (and the rewards we receive) as therapists practising in the global polycrisis.

Of course, as existentialists, we know a little bit about meaning-making and we will be employing phenomenological methodology to make sense of whatever emerges at the workshop. I have been practising existential psychotherapy for about 20 years. About 15 years ago I started asking myself how I might be able to hold safe therapeutic spaces for my clients at times when I might not feel safe myself, and the Covid-19 pandemic brought that hypothetical question into concrete reality. My sense is that all of us existential therapists have similar existential questions at the heart of our practices, and you are invited to bring your own questions for exploration.

This will be a highly experiential workshop and, following established existential tradition, you will be encouraged to listen to your own internal wisdom and each other, as much if not more than you listen to me. Equal weight will be put on the
thoughts and feelings that emerge during our waking conscious state and the thoughts and feelings which emerge as dreams during our sleeping state.”

Working language at the workshops is English with translation to Russian.

Dida Mitchell (UK) 
Honouring, creating and breaking traditions in supervision, therapy and life.

Birštonas, September 19th – 20th, 2025.

Dida has worked as a therapist and supervisor since 1994 and as a mediator since 2006. She was a visiting lecturer and supervisor at Regent’s University from 1995 – 2013. Dida is currently a visiting lecturer at the New School of Psychotherapy and Counselling, London and Roehampton University, Surrey. She has facilitated yearly workshops in Bristonas since 2021 on Existential Supervision.

Dida about her workshop: “The two days will consist of supervision sessions and discussions. Do we still express our fundamental approach and attitude to life we had long before becoming therapists, even though we naturally shift and change within every relationship?
This will be a joint effort, so I hope to hear what matters to you now and what you have discarded along the way. I also hope that you will come away with a clearer picture of your unique ‘style’ in life, and how that is expressed in your practice as a therapist and as a supervisor now.”
